HOUSEMASTER POSITIONS

Pretoria Boys High School

Pretoria Boys High School is a traditional boys school located on an 85-acre campus southeast of the city centre. Established in 1901, it is one of the oldest schools in the province. With an enrolment of around 1500 pupils it is the largest boys’ school in South Africa. The school prides itself on maintaining exceptional standards and this is illustrated through our ethos of holistic education based on the fundamental pillars of a full academic, cultural and sporting programme. PBHS is a public school with additional funding generated through school fees. Three boarding houses provide accommodation for over 300 pupils.

HOUSEMASTER POSITIONS

Applications are invited for day house and boarding Housemaster positions which will be effective from 1st January 2022.

Background

PBHS is the largest boys high school in South Africa. When, in the 1990s, the school was expanded substantially beyond 1000 pupils, the number of day houses was increased (to seven) to allow the school to be divided into a number of manageable units, each of which is, in effect, a self-contained sub-division. The houses can therefore be seen as schools in miniature, each with their own hierarchy and staff who are allocated to specific roles. It is important to emphasise that this vertical division of the school means that housemasters have a central role to play in the administration and pastoral care of pupils. The success of Boys High as an educational institution is thus, to a very large extent, dependent on the effectiveness of the house system and that in turn is a product of the leadership provided by the housemasters.

The role of Housemaster at PBHS is considered to be a promotion position that encourages personal and professional development of potential leaders.

Job description

Day Housemasters are responsible for the seven day houses within the school, with approximately 175 boys within each house. They manage a staff team that comprises five tutors, a pastoral care tutor, a reserve tutor and a language advisor. Eight house prefects are also responsible to the Housemaster. The Housemasters are responsible for the pastoral care of boys in their house; the management of house participation in the inter-house events (sporting and cultural) and the issuing of academic performance reports (in which they have commented) to parents at various junctures in the year.

Boarder Senior Housemasters are responsible for approximately 115 boys in each of the three boarding houses. Their responsibilities are the same as day house housemasters, but within the context of the boarding establishment. This involves a variety of other management roles relating to the daily and weekly routines of a boarding house. The staffing complement is similar to a day house, but with the assistant boarder housemasters being resident in the houses.
A successful candidate would be expected to teach a 4/5 load and play an active role in the extra mural programme in addition to the duties described above.

Minimum requirements for applicants

Applicants must have a minimum of five years teaching experience at the time of applying. They must be SACE registered.

Additional attributes

The following would be an advantage:

  • In the case of applicants for boarding housemaster positions, previous experience in a boarding house 
  • Previous responsibility managing a facet of a school’s activities (academic or extra-mural) 
  • Proficient language ability 
  • Teaching experience in an all-boys school

Eligibility of exiting housemasters

Housemasters currently in office are eligible to re-apply for their positions, subject to the understanding that they will be part of the same shortlisting and selection process as all other applicants.

Remuneration package

Day Housemasters 

  • An SGB allowance based on their existing salary
  • Housing on the estate or a living-out allowance

Boarding Senior Housemasters 

  • A GDE allowance (of 12.5 % of salary) 
  • Housing 
  • A meal allowance when on duty

Electric Guitar (Contract Post)

  • A suitable professional qualification i.e. a degree or diploma in music or equivalent experience, having specialised in electric guitar

  • The candidate will be responsible to prepare students for the practical component of subject music up to Grade 12 
  • The ability to train ensemble groups and source the necessary repertoire for group work 
  • Good organisational skills, preferably experience in organising musical groups and/or events 
  • The willingness and ability to teach beginners 
  • Previous experience in teaching in an IEB school will be an advantage 
  • Fully computer literate with the ability to incorporate technology in the classroom and for administrative tasks 
  • The willingness to perform with ensembles within the department at special occasions

Senior Business Studies Teacher

Requirements for the position: 

  • The successful candidate must have at least three to five years of teaching experience and should be innovative, technologically able and willing to play a full and significant role in their department, potentially even as Head of Department. 
  •  Applicants would ideally have experience teaching to Grade 12 level as a Business Studies educator. 
  • Newly qualified teachers will not be considered for the position currently being advertised. 
  • The successful candidate will be passionate about their subject and teaching as a profession.

VACANCY: HEAD OF DEPARTMENT PHYSICAL SCIENCE
EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

PBHS will be advertising the position of Head of Department Physical Science in the next Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) Vacancy List. The appointment date is 1 July 2021.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience :
