Pretoria Boys High School is a traditional boys school located on an 85-acre campus southeast of the city centre. Established in 1901, it is one of the oldest schools in the province. With an enrolment of around 1500 pupils it is the largest boys’ school in South Africa. The school prides itself on maintaining exceptional standards and this is illustrated through our ethos of holistic education based on the fundamental pillars of a full academic, cultural and sporting programme. PBHS is a public school with additional funding generated through school fees. Three boarding houses provide accommodation for over 300 pupils.

The following vacancy exists:

Grounds Machinery Operator (School Governing Body post: two (2) full-time permanent positions start date 1 February 2020 depending on availability)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Qualifications and Education Requirements: Grade 10
  • Valid code 8 drivers licence
  • Experience Requirements: 5 + years of related experience

Role and Responsibilities

The role that the successful candidate will fill will be predominantly that of a brush-cutter operator. He will however from time to time be required to operate a tractor either with a trailer for moving material or other tractor drawn equipment for mowing, fertilizing or the application of pesticides to the fields

The candidate must have experience in the following skills to fill this position;


  • Able and willing to carry out any lawful and reasonable instruction from his Line Manager
  • Able to carry out pre start checks on machinery
  • Identify and report problems on machinery
  • Understand safe working procedures
  • Able to follow written instructions with regards to the application of pesticides

Other Responsibilities include but is not limited to:
1. General Estate work during the Winter months or when cutting is limited
2. Your Line Manager is entitled to, at his discretion, instruct you with additional responsibilities, which falls within the boundaries of your job description, or in accordance with operational requirements.

Estate and Facilities Manager

Estate and Facilities Manager
The position will commence 1 March
The position is full-time and the successful candidate would report to the Bursar

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Thorough & constant supervision and management of a multi-disciplinary team of staff including performance management, coaching, mentoring, training, disciplinary matters, leave, etc.
  • Supervision of sub-contractors and external service providers to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily.
  • Responsible for general routine maintenance of buildings, grounds, fields, swimming pool and security (gates, remotes, CCTV, alarms and perimeter fence), equipment & tools. Responsible for ensuring that all deviations (lights, water, plumbing, aircons, etc.) are reported timeously
  • Ensure compliance with all health & safety and environmental regulations and guidelines
  • Close control of budget in conjunction with the Bursar
  • Procurement of assets and consumables required for efficient running of the facilities department 
  • General handyman duties (ability to perform minor electrical, mechanical, plumbing or structural repairs him/herself)
  • Ensuring facilities are prepared for all requirements and events. In particular, working with the Head of Sport regarding marking of field and preparing for all sport activities.
  • From time to time overseeing building projects and renovations.
  • Fleet management, including vehicle bookings, safety checks and service scheduling.

Key Competencies – the successful applicant is likely to possess the following key competencies:

  • Be proficient in English and Afrikaans (a third language would be advantageous).
  • the ability to be assertive but flexible and to pay attention to detail;
  • a self-starter who can manage themselves and work independently;
  • a strongly driven work ethic;
  • excellent interpersonal skills with colleagues, students and parents;
  • good organisational and administrative skills;
