Herschel Girls Senior School seeks to appoint a
Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy Teacher (IEB)
Grades 10 . 12 (Maths Lit)
Grades 8 and 9 (Mathematics)
to commence duties in January 2022

Herschel Girls School is adopting the IEB NSC qualification effective 01 January 2022 and is looking for an innovative and progressive teacher who seeks the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and excellent staff and school.

The successful applicant will be a suitably qualified teacher with Mathematics as a specialist subject.

The following are essential:

  • A demonstrable passion for and expert experience in teaching Mathematical Literacy up to Grade 12 preferably within the IEB curriculum
  • Be fully committed to the school's transformation, equity and belonging strategic objectives in support of an equitable, inclusive and safe school environment for all
  • A willingness to work within the values and ethos of the school and a commitment to involve oneself in the broader extramural programme on offer at the school
  • Excellent relational skills which allow for the development of a progressive, safe, inclusive, exciting teaching environment
  • Healthy self-awareness and a well-developed sense of duty of care towards one's students and one's colleagues
  • An understanding and appreciation of Girls' Education and the nuances applicable to support the educational premise of nurturing confident, independent, caring, resolute and inspiring young women
  • The skills and care required to be a tutor within the House system which we operate at Herschel. This involves active engagement with a small group of students across the grades, having oversight of their wellbeing and their academic progress
  • A proven ability to establish a dynamic learning environment and to nurture curiosity and intellectual agility through the advancement of a relevant and rich curriculum. More specifically, a passion for exploring an African curriculum and for sourcing material to support excellence and achievement that is created and inspired by Africans
  • Excellent administrative, communication and organisational skills
  • The ability to integrate technology with confidence and flair to support a blended learning environment which engages students
  • The ability to explore a rapidly changing educational landscape and being open to ongoing personal and professional development to support change

Mathematics and Physical Science Teacher - Senior and FET Phase (IEB)

Core responsibilities:

  • Raising the profile of Mathematics and Physical Science in the Senior and FET Phase
  • Ensure efficient use of resources, creativity and innovation in lesson development and implementation
  • Ensure quality delivery of lessons and projects
  • Contribute to school development as a member of the team
  • Undertake duties as directed by the Head of School.

Key Responsibilities:

1) Quality of Teaching and Learning

  • To provide excellent teaching.
  • To support colleagues across the various subjects, and the school, to ensure excellent teaching delivery.
  • To support staff in achieving excellence in their work.
  • To deliver outstanding student outcomes and to support colleagues in achieving the same.
  • To keep up to date with national developments in relevant subject and teaching practice and methodology.
  • To advise senior colleagues on teaching and learning and to contribute to policy and practice across the school.
  • To raise the quality of learning at the school.

2) Staff Development

  • Work with and support and coach to junior colleagues and academic advisors as part of professional development where required
  • To develop the capacity of colleagues to produce excellent teaching and learning resources.
  • To design professional development activities
  • To work with colleagues in other institutions as appropriate

3) General School Leadership Responsibilities

  • Update the Head of School, other senior managers and the Governing Body on the effectiveness of the provision in your subject area
  • Lead by example as a teacher achieving high standards of student attainment and progress, behavior and motivation through effective teaching
  • Challenge any underperformance within the team and ensure corrective action

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or Bachelor’s Degree with a Post Graduate Certificate majoring in Mathematics and Physical Science
  • At least 5 years’ experience in teaching Mathematics and Physical Science in the Senior and FET Phase
  • IEB experience is essential
  • SACE registered
  • Ability to offer learning support in and out of classroom context
  • Willing to extend self in professional development
  • Clear criminal record
