Herschel Girls School adopted the IEB NSC qualification effective 01 January 2022 and owing to a retirement in this department, is looking for an innovative and progressive Head of Sport who seeks the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and excellent staff and school. The successful applicant will, apart from being a strategic thinker:

  • Have a teaching/Physical Education qualification (BEd/PGCE/BSc in Movement Education)
  • Demonstrate a passion and a willingness to teach Physical Education and Sport from Grade 8 – 12
  • Be innovative, dynamic and progressive, with the ability to motivate pupils and coaches with a range of abilities and skills
  • Lead and manage the sport staff and coaches in the achievement of set sport objectives and targets by ensuring that the sports department is a high performing entity
  • Manage the strategic direction for sport, including development of facilities, sports programmes and the profile of sport
  • Demonstrate excellent administrative, communication and organisational skills
  • Regularly evaluate the application of existing sport policy and effective implementation of new policy
  • Have experience or expertise in at least one of the following codes: hockey, netball, swimming, water polo, tennis, or cross-country and be willing to be a part of the extensive extra-curricular sport programme at the school, which includes travel and weekend activities
  • Maintain and encourage a love for physical activity through participation
  • Be open to explore a rapidly changing educational landscape and be open to ongoing personal and professional development to support change
  • Possess excellent relational skills which allow for the development of a progressive, safe, inclusive and exciting teaching environment

Tennis Coach Intern 2022

The Boys’ College is inviting applications for a Tennis Coach Intern position which will be available from 05 September 2022. Head of Strength and Conditioning

Jeppe High School for Boys invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for the Head of Strength and Conditioning position, commencing from September 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. This vacancy presents an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, dynamic, professionally qualified and skilled individual to implement and manage the strength and conditioning needs at Jeppe High School for Boys. The successful candidate will assist the Director of Sport, work alongside the Sport MICs and play a leading role in coordinating the physical development of learners, both from a high performance and mass participation point of view.

Requirements for the position:

  • A suitable qualification in strength and conditioning, exercise science or human performance.
  • Experience in a similar role, ideally working with teams and with a demonstrated ability to coach and mentor young people. 
  • Track record of implementing and running a strength and conditioning programme and system including management of the gym and high-performance facilities. 
  • Display excellent interpersonal, organisation and administrative skills and an ability to work both independently and within a team. 
  • Have excellent communication skills as well as a strong command of both spoken and written English. Be proficient in Google and Microsoft IT skills. 
  • An interest in education and willingness to form part of a busy holistic boys’ school and where necessary form part of the school’s academic and pastoral offering. A willingness to occasionally work longer hours and a desire to be involved in the broader spectrum of school life.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting the Director of Sport and MICs by drafting and implementing a performance plan and system for each school sport from both a high performance and mass participation point of view. 
  • Assisting coaches to implement strength and conditioning activities both on the field and in the gym. 
  • Overseeing part-time strength and conditioning coaches. 
  • Management of the high-performance facilities and equipment, including management of the gym and programmes for both high-performance and mass participation purposes.
  • Direct, hands-on involvement, oversight and working with certain teams (e.g. 1st XV rugby team) where required.
  • Managing the injury protocols and rehabilitation system of the school including hospital and specialist follow-up management. Work closely with the school physiotherapist, the first-aid team and our medical administrator.
  • Keeping abreast of the current trends in strength and conditioning in order to achieve chief performance.

Strength & Conditioning Coach - Full-time

The role is to provide Dale College with first class Sports Science, Strength & Conditioning services to help enhance performance, injury rehabilitation, and squad availability. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Working under the direction of the Head of Sports:

Strength & Conditioning Responsibilities:

  • Deliver individual and group strength and conditioning sessions to teams and individuals as designated by the Head of Sport, ensuring that all key physiological areas are covered and developed in addition to being based upon athletic development.
  • Assist in the management of injuries and rehabilitation of players to enhance the return to play pathway following injury.
  • Deliver varied on pitch sessions (warm-ups / CV conditioning / recovery) as required.
  • Oversee physical performance screening / testing of players during pre-season and in season.
  • Providing reports and structured individual performance goals based upon individual needs.
  • Improve performance through developing, implementing and evaluating strength and conditioning programmes that reflect scientific principles (adaptation, periodisation, peaking, tapering and injury rehabilitation).
  • Record through the use of excel and other formats players adherence to Strength and Conditioning programs.
  • Work closely with sport department members to enhance and continue to develop injury prevention / performance / nutrition and recovery strategies.
  • Provide detailed daily data from all training, rehabilitation sessions and matches.
  • Produce and oversee players off season fitness programmes.
  • Occasional support for other teams including matches, gym sessions and other data.

Management of Gym Responsibilities:

  • Research Gym layouts and needs, with the intention of overseeing a redevelopment of the Dale College Gym facility.
  • Manage gym areas in co-operation with other Strength and Conditioning team members.

Nutrition Education and Management:

  • Research local nutrition shortcomings in the Dale College community.
  • Development education programs to address poor nutrition in the Dale College context by means of family and player eating habits.
  • Develop supplementary nutrition programmes for identified elite players.

ANY OTHER FAIR AND REASONABLE RESPONSIBILITIES AS PER THE HEADMASTER

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • BSc Sports Science / Strength and Conditioning / Biokinetics

PERSONAL SPECIFICATION – SKILLS / ABILITIES REQUIRED

Essential

  • Experience of training / rehabilitation principles and a sound understanding of rehabilitation process.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to liaise with players and coaches in a professional manner. The ability to communicate in English and isiXhosa would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrate consistent leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to work in a high pressurised environment with a flexible approach to working hours and job role.
  • Attention to detail, organisation and time management skills.
  • Adaptability to changing environment at short notice.
  • Ability to set and maintain high personal and professional standards.
  • Evidence of being a strong team player in the school context.
  • Ability to display key data visually post sessions.

Desirable

  • First aid trained.
  • Experience working in multi-sport setting.

MIC of Rowing

A Master in charge of Rowing is sought with effect from August 2022. RBHS invites applications from qualified educators with a Rowing background, who believe they have the required skills and competencies to take on this role.

Requirements for the position:

  • Must be a SACE accredited teacher.
  • FISA coaching Qualification Level 1 or 2.
  • Must have minimum 2 years of rowing club management experience.
  • Must have experience in managing coaches.
  • A high level of organisational and administrative skills.
  • Professional attitude as a member of the Rondebosch Community.
  • Acute sense in developing an overall club business strategy
  • Will be expected to work closely with the Deputy Head of Sport, Head Coach and Parents’ Support Committee to ensure the club’s success.
  • First Aid Level 1-3 (advantageous) and relevant police clearance required.
