General description of the position:

  1. To assume the position as an educator of:
    • Technology
    • Life Orientation
  2. To perform the duties of a “home class” teacher, with attendance/registration and pastoral care responsibilities. 
  3. Extra-mural involvement including, but not exclusively; involved in various school events and functions. 
  4. To attend subject-specific workshops/training and to report back to members of the Department. 
  5. To perform various school duties, including attending after hours meetings, workshops, functions and other school-related duties.

Applicants would need the following personal attributes: 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • A friendly, dynamic, creative and self-driven personality. 
  • The ability to take a leadership role and to show initiative in work-related situations but also be able to work successfully as part of a team. 
  • An attitude of life-long learning with regards to teaching methodologies and the acquisition of knowledge related to the subject.

Necessary qualifications and skills would include: 

  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree and teaching qualification would be the minimum requirements. 
  • The candidate must be qualified to teach Technology (Grade 8 & 9) as well as Consumer  Studies to Grade 12 level.
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching experience of Consumers Studies at Grade 12 level would be a requirement.
  • SACE registration.
  • A valid and up to date Police clearance.
  • To be highly articulate, confident and competent in the delivery of subject content and skills.
  • Good computer skills with regards to lesson preparation, presentation and general school administration.
  • Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with the learners.

  • Project a professional demeanour and appearance at all times. 
  • Develop positive relationships with members of the GHS school community, which includes parents, learners and colleagues. 
  • Be prepared to support and uphold the ethos of the school as contained in the Mission Statement.

The salary package will be based on qualifications and previous teaching experience.

Pretoria Boys High School is a traditional boys school located on an 85-acre campus southeast of the city centre. Established in 1901, it is one of the oldest schools in the province. With an enrolment of around 1500 pupils it is the largest boys’ school in South Africa. PBHS is a public school with additional funding generated through school fees. Three boarding houses provide accommodation for over 300 pupils.


PBHS will be advertising the position of Head of Department Physical Science in the next Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) Vacancy List. The appointment date is 1 July 2021.

This is a GDE post.

The Vacancy List is expected to be published during the first quarter of this year.

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

Minimum Qualifications and Experience :

  • Candidates must have a specialist degree with a PGCE. Appropriate teaching qualification is essential. 
  • A major in Physics and Chemistry is preferable. 
  • Valid registration with SACE is required. 
  • Candidates must be able to teach in English. 
  • A minimum of five years teaching experience in Physical Science at Grade 12 level. 
  • Experience as a Head of Department in Physical Sciences is highly recommended.

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Head up the Physical Sciences Department and lead with passion and imagination. 
  • Teaching, assessment, planning and preparation at Grade 8 – 12 level. 
  • Tutor (register teacher) responsibilities. 
  • Participate fully in the extensive cultural and sporting extra-curricular programme of the school.
  • To fulfil all other reasonable duties required of a teacher.
